NTA removes age factor from tie-breaking policy in NEET, JEE Main 2021 entrance exams

Latest Updates:

In a major change in this year’s JEE Main 2021 and NEET 2021 entrance exams, the National Testing Agency (NTA) recently brought a major change as it decided to remove the provision of giving priority to candidates who are older while preparing the rank lists of the JEE Main 2021 for Engineering and the NEET 2021 for Medical admissions.

It is to be noted that as per the information brochures of JEE Main 2021 and NEET 2021 entrance exams released by the NTA there is no mention of the age of candidate as a criterion for breaking ties.

A tie-breaking policy is used by the NTA every year to prepare the rank lists of both the Medical and Engineering entrance exams to ensure that two candidates do not get the same rank. It may be recalled that in NEET 2020, the NTA had used age factor to decide the all-India topper as two students, Soyeb Aftab from Odisha and Uttar Pradesh’s Akanksha Singh both scored 720 out of 720.

Similarly, tie-breaking policy was adopted by NTA last year for the JEE Main Engineering exam and the candidates with higher NTA scores in Mathematics were given preference, followed by their scores in Chemistry and Physics. But he age factor for tie-breaking for the JEE Main exam has now been removed by NTA as a dactor while deciding the rank.
